A single-cask release of Chichibu, selected by and bottled for The Whisky Tribe. It’s a peated dram, made using Scottish peat, and maturation in a bourbon cask has amplified the fruity spirit, to give a balanced of leathery smoke and orchard fruit.
This limited-edition Chichibu was distilled in 2013 and matured in a single first-fill bourbon barrel #2661. It is a Whiskey Tribe exclusive bottling, said to be a peated dram, made using Scottish peat. Maturation in a bourbon cask has amplified the spirit and created a complex blend of notes of smoke and orchard fruit.

Far less heat on the nose than I had expected. Rather peaty but not so intense and phenolic as, let’s say, some of the Laphroaig’s I’ve tried. It’s more on smoke and maritime. Less industrial. I like this. It reminds me of going on a late evening run beside the bay, and the smell of salt water mixing with people’s barbecues. It’s not massively complex, but the more I smell it, the more I learn to like it. There’s citrus too. Dare I say there’s a certain elegance despite the power?

Powerful, but again, I’m surprised that I don’t pick up on more alcohol. Follows the nose, but somewhat generally, I find it harder to give a high score to the taste than to the nose.

Some heat certainly shows up on the finish. Lasting peat.
