Description

Colonel E.H. Taylor Jr. Amaranth

In honor of former distillery owner Colonel E. H. Taylor, this distinctive whiskey is the tenth release in the E.H. Taylor, Jr. lineup that includes their Small Batch Bourbon, Single Barrel Bourbon, Barrel Proof Bourbon, and Straight Rye.

This Amaranth Bourbon is Bottled-in-Bond as with previous releases. This 100 proof special release delivers a complex profile of toffee, mint, dark berries and pecans.

In the nineteenth century, bourbon aristocrat Colonel Edmund Haynes Taylor, Jr. exuded a passion for producing the finest whiskey in the world.

This bourbon honors Taylor’s enduring spirit of innovation and commitment to exceptional whiskey by introducing Amaranth as the flavoring grain.

Amaranth was originally cultivated by the Aztecs and is known as the “Grain of the Gods.” This ancient grain is similar to wheat, but offers a complex taste with subtle flavors ranging from a nose of butterscotch and spearmint, to a finish of pecans and dark berries.

Amaranth roughly translates to “never fading,” just like the legacy of Colonel Taylor, the founding father of the modern bourbon industry.

Caramel, baking spice and oak on the nose followed by toffee, mint, dark berries and pecans on the palate. The finish is tannic with medium-length notes.
palate

Its thin mouthfeel is immediately noticeable, but this is countered with a vibrant set of flavors. Butterscotch, honey, caramel, summer fruits, and again a touch of oak. It’s a noticeable step down from the intensity of the aroma, but still enjoyable.

finish

Sweet flavors tease at first, but traces of leather and tobacco quickly develop as well. Some bitterness follows along with a tannic note. It’s medium-length at best, and feels somewhat abbreviated and subpar compared to the rest of the sip.

uniqueness

Buffalo Trace has many experiments in the works, and in recent years has chosen to honor E.H. Taylor by releasing limited experimental variations of the brand. Attributing this to Taylor’s persona, Buffalo Trace has stated it “honors Taylor’s enduring spirit of innovation and commitment to exceptional whiskey.”
